Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan Reaffirm Push on East-West Transport Links
Azerbaijan's ambassador to Turkmenistan, Mahammad Ahmadzada, and Turkmenistan's
ambassador to Azerbaijan, Sapar Palvanov, met this month in Brussels to discuss deepening transport
and regional cooperation between the two Caspian neighbours.
The ambassadors reviewed recent milestones in bilateral maritime cooperation, including the May
commissioning of Turkmenistan's "Gadamly" cargo vessel — a 6,100-tonne, 240-container carrier built
with Korean technical support — and June's handover by Azerbaijan of the "Dostlug" oil tanker, a 141-
metre vessel with a deadweight capacity of 7,875 tonnes, to Turkmenistan's merchant fleet. They also
discussed Azerbaijan's engagement in Central Asian consultative formats and the region's strengthening
ties with the European Union.
Both sides voiced support for developing the East-West and Caspian-Black Sea transport corridors that
link Central Asia to Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye and European markets, part of a broader effort to
deepen the two countries' role in transregional connectivity.
