Turkmenistan Pushes Caspian Transport Agenda, Proposes 2029 Year of Connectivity
Turkmenistan used the 111th meeting of the CIS Economic Council in Ashgabat this month to press the case for the Caspian region's role in Eurasian logistics, proposing that member states designate 2029 as a Year of Transport Connectivity.
Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Khojamyrat Geldimyradov told the gathering that the geographic position of CIS countries allows them to serve as a key link in sustainable logistics routes between Europe and Asia. He said the proposed thematic year would focus on transport infrastructure projects, international routes, digitalization and multimodal connectivity, and on addressing remaining infrastructure barriers.
Officials stressed that the Turkmenbashi International Seaport functions as a critical gateway for Trans-Caspian cargo operations, even as fluctuating Caspian Sea water levels add urgency to coordinated regional management of ports and shipping infrastructure.
